How to add an External News Article

An external news article is one where you refer to it on your site, but the story lives on another website (i.e. YaleNews).

Creating a news article that links off to an external site may seem daunting, but it is actually a simple process! External news articles function just like an internal news story where all the content lives on your site, but just hands the user off to the outside source (i.e. a YaleNews story). In this how to guide, you will be guided through the steps necessary to add an external article.

Step 1—Login

Login Screen Photo

Login to your website by inputting your NetID and password. This will in turn allow you to access the editing mode Yale Sites has.

Step 2—Access the Administrator Bar

In the Administrator Bar, which is at the top of the screen, there is an option named “Content.” Hover your mouse over the icon which will open up a drop-down menu of many content types. Then with your mouse select “Add Content” then “Post.”

Note: If you are trying to manage an existing post, then instead of selecting the “Create Content” icon, hover over it instead and choose the “Manage Posts” icon to view the articles or blogs that were created.

Step 3—Fill Out the Fields

Now you are on the page where you will fill out the following “necessary” fields:

  • Title
  • Publish date
  • Category (if using a news taxonomy)
  • Teaser Lead-in
  • Teaser Title (same as main title)
  • Teaser Text (a brief one or two lines about the news article)
  • Teaser Media (the image for your news article)

Note: A category taxonomy allows you to show different stories on different pages or allows the end user to sort stories.

Step 4—Place External Link

After filling text fields, you will need to specify the external link. In order to add the link, first make sure the flyout sidebar is visible (If it’s not, then near the top right of the page will be an icon that looks like a fence. When pressed it will allow a column to appear.) Open the “External Source” field and enter the full URL.

Step 5—Select Publish

Once all of your information is entered and ready, select the blue button named “Publish” in the top right of the page.

Step 6—Congratulations !

Finally, after selecting to publish the article, the page will automatically fo to the external source (in this example, the Yale Insights site).

Note: If you need to make any changes, you will need to go to “Manage Posts” and select the edit option next to your article.
