FAQs

We are building out an FAQ resource where you can find quick answers to the questions we get asked the most. If you cannot find what you are looking for, feel free to reach out to us at fas.web@yale.edu.

In general, the platform is available for academic units, research labs, and centers. Faculty looking for a personal website may pursue a CampusPress option or external companies (i.e. purchasing a URL, hosting space, platform, agency, etc.).

Stand-alone event websites are also not being provisioned on the YaleSites platform. (Note: the YaleSites platform is a great option for a dynamic event presence as part of a department or program website and connects directly with the main Yale events calendar.)

Registered student organizations must utilize Yale Connect for their group’s web publishing. All registered student organizations have access to a Yale Connect webpage.

Send the FAS web team a note at fas.web@yale.edu with a brief summary of your project and we can help you with first steps, make sure YaleSites is right for your project, and with submitting the request for a development space (where your new site would get built).

When your new site is ready to go live, the FAS Web Team can assist you in submitting the request and coordinating with ITS. If we are working with you directly on a project, that is part of our process. If you have been working on your site separately, we will do a quick overall review and then help you with the go-live process.

Note: your development space will still be available to you after your site has been launched, any further changes can be made directly on the live site.

The FAS web team can schedule a 1:1 platform demo built around regular maintenance needs (text updating, creating new news items or profiles, removing content, etc.) and also assist with getting authoring access set-up. We can also recommend training and resources provided by the university-wide YaleSites group.

Website Rebuild Project Overview

When a department or program is ready, we engage with you on the rebuild start-to-finish. Some of the project milestones are:

  • Current site analysis, revised navigation planning, and project planning and management
  • Project kick-off meeting
  • Regular meetings with the department or program (status, Q&A, planning)
  • Content work period
  • Layout and review periods
  • Final reviews and go-live

(Note: post go-live support continues from this point, we are here to help you as  your site grows)

Illustration of a team working together

These projects do take time, both in the scope of work involved, factoring in the other responsibilities the department or program has, as well as the nature of the academic year. On average, they can take eight-to-twelve months and are truly most successful with a collaborative group effort. While a fair amount of time, it is time well spent resulting in a new site with a modern look, accessibility and device-responsiveness built in, and much easier for staff to maintain.

To give some context on the value of using the YaleSites platform + the services of the FAS Web Team, a website project with a medium level of complexity and approx. 250 pages (information, profiles, news, events, etc.) over the average time period could total between $76,000–$96,000. This figure is based on the assumed market rate of a small agency of $150/hour and includes the stated project work + additional discovery/research period an agency would need to conduct. The web team is an internal FAS group and are experts in the platform, bringing all their knowledge to each project. All of our work, along with the platform, are “free to you” costs that yield great benefit.

If your department is not currently working/has not worked with us yet and you would like to learn more about what is involved, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at fas.web@yale.edu.
